This serene image of
Sennuwy, the wife of a provincial governor, is a masterpiece of
Egyptian sculpture. Worked in hard, black granite, the rounded
forms of Sennuwys body are beautifully proportioned, and
the smooth planes of her face are strikingly framed by the ribbed
patterning of her heavy wig. Sennuwy and her husband were buried
at Assiut, in central Egypt, in an elaborate tomb for which this
funerary statue was probably made. However, the statue was found
far to the south of Egypt, in the burial of a Nubian ruler of
Kerma. Apparently, the statue was removed from the tomb in Egypt
and taken to Nubia several hundred years after Sennuwys
death.
